DAWA 2012: How the wines are judged

By Decanter

16 SEP 2012

1. Wine Categorisation
Wines will be presented in flights of approximately 12 wines and will be categorised according to:

· Region and sub-region of production
· Grape variety
· Wine style
· Vintage

The wines will be judged purely on quality with no price indication.

2. Judge Tasting-Medals
Judges taste wines individually, then compare notes and reach a consensus on the wine’s final score.

Scoring System
The Decanter Asia Wine Awards uses the 20 point or 100 points scoring system wherein wines are eligible for the following medals:

100 Points

20 Points

95 – 100

18.5 – 20

90 – 94

17 – 18.4

Very good to excellent

85 – 89

15.5 – 16.9

81 – 84

14.5 – 15.4

All wines which achieve enough points to merit Silver or Gold medals will be re-tasted by the Vice-Chair for approval.

3. Judge Tasting-Regional Trophy
Gold medal winning wines go forward to compete for Regional Trophies. A Regional Trophy is awarded to the best wine from all Gold medal winners within its category. The Vice-Chair, assisted by two other judges chosen at his/her discretion, chooses Regional Trophy winners.

4. Senior Judge Tasting-International Trophy
Regional Trophy winners then compete for International Trophies. Vice-Chairs and the Co-Chairs of the Decanter Asia Wine Awards choose International Trophy winners at a tasting held on Thursday 20th September, in the afternoon.

5. Publishing Results and DAWA Tasting Events
The Results are published on DecanterChina.com. Producers label medal-winning wines with stickers for consumers to recognise in store.

Decanter will be promoting the DAWA winners wines in trade and consumer tastings throughout Asia, as well as working with media and promotional partners to ensure that the winning wines are exposed to a wide consumer audience across the continent. Partnering with Enomatic, the worldwide leader of wine serving technology, the DAWA winners will be shown in leading wine establishments across Asia.
