Cassis & Bandol: where to stay, shop, eat and relax

Editor's pick: best hotels, local restaurants and shopping attractions in Cassis and Bandol.

HOTELS

Maison 9, Cassis

Sophisticated B&B owned by German interior designer Cynthia Kayser-Maus. Sweeping vineyard views, attractive garden, pool and four delightful rooms, all with private terraces.

Hotel de la Plage Mahogany, Cassis

Relaxed, summery hotel so close to the sea that it feels like you’re staying on a boat. Rooms to the front merit their higher price: fall asleep to the sound of breaking waves. The beach is pebbly but good for swimming.

Hotel Ile Rousse, Bandol

Ultra-modern, design-led hotel on one of Bandol’s beaches, recently revamped from top to polished toe. Pros: dreamy sunset views and a serious thalassotherapy spa. Cons: expensive.

RESTAURANTS

Les Fiertes D’Angelina, Cassis

This is a welcome change from all the touristy port-side restaurants in Cassis. Recently overhauled, the Angelina teams well-judged, modern Provençal food with a short but carefully crafted wine list.

Divino, Cassis

Small wine bar-cum-shop near the harbour, run by ex-sommelier Philippe Bellac. Good selection of local and other wines by the glass or bottle, plus excellent charcuterie.

Hostellerie Bérard, Bandol

Joining his chef father René in 2006 to win a Michelin star, Jean-François Bérard (pictured right with his father) has brought a lightness of touch to the dishes served in the superb restaurant of this comfortable hotel in La Cadière d’Azur. My best Provence meal in ages. Cookery classes, wine tours, spa.

La Table du Vigneron, Bandol

Charming, sophisticated and elegant restaurant at the Domaine de Terrebrune winery. Dishes are based on fresh, local produce, much of it organic. Open for lunch and dinner all year (by no means the norm in Provence).

La Grange, Bandol

In the village of Le Beausset north of Bandol, this cosy, rustic restaurant is in a converted old forge. Top-quality beef and lamb, locally sourced and simply grilled, are the perfect foil for savoury Bandol reds.

SHOPS

Le Chai Cassidain, Cassis

Wines from all 12 Cassis domaines are on sale here. Come apéritif time, the shop morphs into a pleasant little wine bar.

Oenothèque des Vins de Bandol, Bandol

Spacious new shop on the seafront, selling the wines of almost all Bandol’s 50-plus producers at cellar door prices. Well-trained staff.
