The dinner, hosted by Chinese president Xi Jinping, featured a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay, both from Chateau Changyu Afip Global.

Both Xi and Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee were seen proposing toasts with a glass of red wine during speeches at the welcome dinner, local media reported.

‘Over the last three years, the wines produced by Chateau Changyu Afip Global were chosen for over 30 national-level banquets, where state leaders entertain their distinguished international guests,’ a Changyu spokesperson told DecanterChina.com.

‘We are honoured to be chosen for the Youth Olympics welcoming dinner, and hope its international guests can explore the fine quality of Chinese wines through our produce.’

Serving domestic-produced wines at government-hosted international occasions has been a common practice in China for number of years. The wines for such occasions usually reflect the preference of the guests, and in some cases have politically symbolic meanings.

‘For example, as the chief winemaker of Chateau Changyu Afip Global was from France, its wines were chosen for the state banquet with François Hollande, President of France, because it symbolise Sino-France cooperation, ’ Changyu said.

Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, was also present at the official welcome dinner.

The Youth Olympic Games are hosted in Nanjing, China from 16-28 August, 2014.
