Neutral, drought-resistant Spanish variety grown mainly around the La Mancha region, used to be the world's most widely planted vine variety. Recent research shows that its plantings have reduced dramatically in the last two decades and it's now (2010) the world's third most planted variety, after Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
