Château Siran

Château Siran

Château Siran, located in the town of Labarde at the South side of the Margaux Appellation is one of the historic properties of the Medoc.

The estate which owns 88 hectares among which 36 of vines and 25 in Margaux Appellation benefits from an outstanding terroir constituted by gravels and pebbles, the type of soil which retain few rainwater.

The average 33 years old vines are planted on a density of 10,000 stocks per hectare for an average yield of 48 hl per hectare.

The grape varieties repartition is quite unique, with a high percentage of Merlot and Petit Verdot. It is composed of the following:

- 46% Merlot for an elegant roundness
- 40% Cabernet Sauvignon for the strength
- 13% Petit-Verdot, one of the highest percentages of the appellation which gives the wine its power its strong color and its lingering.
- 1% Cabernet Franc

Surrounded by classed growths (Château Giscours, Prieuré-Lichine and Dauzac), Château Siran is really ‘the forgotten one’ of the 1855 Classification.

Thus, Château Siran waited till 2003 to be elected one of the 9 ‘Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels’ among 400 candidates.

Château Siran is at the same time one of the rare Medoc Château to belong to the same family since more than 150 years. It is on the 14th of January 1859 the Château became the Miailhe Family’s property. Their ancestor Leo Barbier bought the estate for 100,000 francs from the Count and Countess de Toulouse Lautrec, the grandparents of the famous painter Henri de Toulouse Lautrec.

Each Year Château Siran produces between 130 and 150,000 bottles including the Second wine, S de Siran.

Tasting Notes

Château Siran 2009 by Decanter

James Lawther MW & Steven Spurrier Score 17

Fine, floral, red fruits nose, very expressive; lifted Cabernet fruit, good earthy depth, a very good wine that needs time to harmonise, will age well.

Château Siran 2010 by Decanter

Steven Spurrier Score 16.5

Very well-extracted ripe fruit, good earthy expression and an elegant structure to back it up, a bit robust now, but will show well.

Château Siran 2011 by Decanter

Finely expressed cassis fruit, good concentration and depth, very well made wine that shows class above its (non) classification.
