Christie’s Hong Kong to auction Decanter Asia Wine Awards wines for charity

By

Two hundred cases of wine from this year’s Decanter Asia Wine Awards are to be sold this week as part of a fine wine auction held at Christie’s Hong Kong to raise money for the newly formed Decanter Asia Wine Scholarship programme.

The auction, which takes place on Sunday 25 November, comprises a number of mixed 12-bottle cases from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

All of the bottles have been selected by Christie’s and the Decanter team and have been chosen from the upper end of the wines submitted with regard to price.

Highlighted in the Christie’s Hong Kong catalogue are lots of 96 bottles of red Bordeaux and Sauternes from some of the region’s most renowned appellations, including the Medoc, Saint-Estephe, Saint-Julien, Margaux, Graves, Pessac-Leognan and Saint-Emilion, with each lot estimated at HK$8,000–10,000 (£650-800).

Lots of 48 bottles of Champagne also stand-out with low estimates starting from HK$9,000 (£730), providing the perfect entry point for new collectors.

Other estimates include HK$6,000 (£485) per lot of 84 bottles of Burgundy and HK$6,500 (£526) per lot of 84 bottles of Rhône.

All proceeds of the auction will go to the newly created Decanter Asia Wine Scholarship programme, an educational initiative which supports Asia’s most promising wine palates and future wine professionals.

The first Decanter Asia Wine Awards, a sister competition to the Decanter World Wine Awards, received 2,248 wines from 42 wine regions from around the world.

There were 1482 red wines entered, 713 white wines, and 54 rosés, along with the other main styles such as sweet wines, sparkling and fortified. Eighty-four percent of the entrants won a medal.

A selection of the top wines from the awards will be introduced to consumers at a limited number of venues throughout Asia as part of the Decanter Asia Winners’ Tastings programme, a partnership with wine dispenser manufacturer Enomatic.
